When i click on the "X" button in the upper right hand corner OR when i
choose the pull down menu in file and click close, Outlook 2000 closes down
and if i do control, alt delete, it shows that it is NOT running. However,
the envelope icon will appear in the task bar indicating i have new mail.
When i open outlook, i'll have a bunch of new mail. mostly spam. I don't
want it running in the back ground. I try to go into the server of my isp
and block the spam from there.

how do i get outlook to SHUT DOWN! If i reboot, it will be closed. but i
don't want to reboot 12000000 times a day.

Any advise?

Looks like we are supposed to guess which operating system you use. My
guess is you use Windows XP (but that's just a guess). Sounds like you
are just looking under the Applications tab in Task Manager. Look under
the Processes tab and check if there is still an outlook.exe process
running after you exit Outlook.
