I can't change my sound settings in msn messager

I am tring to change my new mail sound. I go to control panel and change the
sound. Then I save the sound scheme under a new name and apply it. It works
fine until I turn off the computer. After startup I check the sound scheme I
made and all the sounds are back to there defult settings. What am I doing
wrong here?

I don't know if this applies, but it might be worth a look.

The sound scheme is set to No Sounds, but some event sounds occur after you
install Windows XP Service Pack 2:
