Recently I downloaded what seemed to be a large batch of
microsoft updates. The computer had already been running
slow, due to what I now know to be something called an ad-
installer, which seemed to take effect after installing
programmes on tweak-xp. Anyways I installed spybot and ad
aware after restoring the computer back to a point
several months ago. I'm a lost sheep man!. The problem
appeared to clear up as the computer begn operating at a
workable speed. Theen I downloaded those upgrades. Not
only tht but I also request the downloads to be received
automatically with notification being received at the
intallation point. The computer will now only switch on
and the start up menu can be accessed most of the time,
but tht all. If I click on any of the programmes either
it take twenty minutes for anything to appear or a box
appears saying application has been denied or words to
that effect. I am also told that I am low on virtual
memory, but I'm not sure what that means. I have an xp
disc to hand but I don't know what I should do now to get
this thing working. Your help would be so appreciated.
cheers

Based on the information in your message, you might want to do a repair of
XP.

You can perform a Repair install which will leave all of your data and files
in place. Read the steps carefully.

First, disconnect your internet connection and do not reconnect it until the
repair is complete and you have enabled the built in XP firwall.

Before you start, go into the BIOS and set your CD drive as the first boot
device

Boot the computer from the XP CD-ROM.

When the computer starts from the CD, the system checks your hardware and
then prompts you to select one of the following options:

To set up Windows XP now, press ENTER.
To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.
To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.

Press ENTER.

Press F8 to accept the Licensing Agreement.

A box lists your current Windows XP installation, and then the system
prompts you to select one of the following options:

To repair the selected Windows XP installation, press R.
To continue installing a fresh copy of Windows XP without repairing, press
ESC.

Press R to start the automatic repair process.

After repairing Windows XP, you will need to re-download all updates,
starting with SP1.
