Save your document to your hard drive and then copy to the CD.

I don't think it is MS Word that is the problem. Windows XP does not have
the capability to save direct to CD. You need a third party program that
can format your CD for direct access. Nero and Roxio both have programs
with this capability.

You can save a file direct from word if you have packet writing software
installed. This comes with Roxio Easy Media Creator (called Drag To Disk) or
Nero (called InCD).

Install one of these CD/DVD packages and you will be able to do what you
wish to do.

and if i had one of those programs it would enable me to save straight from
any program? i can burn a cd straight from windows media player but it would
not let me save my document from either microsoft word or wordpad

Do some reading on how CD writing works in XP. Media player is a
program designed to do what it does. It's not used when you are saving
word documents - the in built XP functions are used - which cannot write
to CD as you would a floppy. As others have said 3rd party, packet
writing software is needed. Do some reading here:

Right.

You cannot write to a CD from Notepad either. Nor can you copy/paste from,
say, this newsgroup to a CD. Word, Wordpad, Notepad, and a zillion other
programs do not have native CD-writing capability.
