I have been using Windows Mail for nearly two months now, and it has been
fine, but since yesterday I have only been able to RECEIVE messages, not SEND
messages aswell.
Does anyone have an idea why this has happened / what I should now do?
Thanks.

Hard to say without more details. Do you get an error message when
you try to send? If so, right-click on your error message, copy, then paste
it into a reply here.
We can't do much troubleshooting without the complete error message.

The following is the error message I got when my mail could not go out. I
have just set up my Windows Mail and think I have some error on the smtp
setting but don't know how to correct it. Thanks for any help you can give
me. Amrak
The host 'SMPTauth.peoplepc.com' could not be found. Please verify that you
have entered the server name correctly.
Subject 'Re: Recharge Ohio - By the Numbers', Account: 'pop.peoplepc.com',
Server: 'SMPTauth.peoplepc.com', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): Yes,
Socket Error: 11001, Error Number: 0x800CCC0D

I acquired new laptop today w/Vista. Setting up email, receiving just fine,
but will not send - shows no error when attempting to do so. Settings appear
to be fine.

Change smptauth.peoplepc.com to smtpauth.peoplepc.com.
To get to that setting go to Tools, Accounts, select that peoplepc.com
account, click Properties, Servers. After you make that correction,
go to the Advanced tab and change port 25 to port 587, and unselect
the SSL option. The complete email setup directions are here:

What happens to the message you are trying to send, does it stay
in the Outbox or does it go into the Sent Items folder?
Who is the mail provider?
Which antivirus are you running?

This is the error message:

The connection to the server has failed. Subject 'TUTORIAL ESSAYS', Account:
'POP3.btconnect.com', Server: 'SMTP.btconnect.com', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25,
Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10061, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

The message stays in the Outbox, and then that message appears.

When you got that error, was your Internet connection being obtained
from BT? As a general rule, the owner of the SMTP server must be the
same as the one providing your Internet connection at that moment.
Are you sending from home or away from home? Who is your ISP?

I am away from home at the moment, using a university connection. I had
previoisly used a BT connection from home.

What you are experiencing is normal, see
http://www.postcastserver.com/help/Port_25_Blocking.aspx

As a general rule, the owner of the SMTP server must be the same as
the one providing your Internet connection at that moment.

The available workarounds when sending away from home are as follows:

1. Use webmail for sending (via your browser).
2. Ask your home ISP if they have a port other than '25' for SMTP. I don't think
BT does.
3. If you use the same away-from-home connection frequently, substitute the SMTP
server belonging to that connection. This is a bit tricky, but if you want to go that route,
I can provide more details.
4. If you frequently send from multiple locations, get a free Gmail account,
configure it for POP access, and use it for your sending chores.
Gmail uses port 465 for SMTP, which is not blocked like port 25 is.

Can you please give me some more information on option 3 because I think that
will be best for my needs. Thanks.

I can't give you precise directions because I don't know the name of
your university's outgoing (SMTP) mail server, or whether it requires
send authentication. Once you have that information, go to Tools,
Accounts, select that btconnect.com account, then click on
Properties, Servers. Change SMTP.btconnect.com to the name of
the university's SMTP server. If required, also check the box for
"My server requires authentication". If the latter option is used, also
click on the associated Settings button, then "Log on using", and enter
your university's mail credentials.

If that seems too complicated, you can always use BT's webmail.
