I can only connect by putting in IP addresses..

Right I have been trying to tackle this internet connection sharing for about
2 weeks now( no lie) and I'm nearly there...
Only problem is one of the pc's can only connect if you enter the ip address
it does not recognise the web address..could some please offer sum insight
 
before anything do a 'ipconfig /all' on a working machine, compare the DNS
server entry to that on the machine not-working properly.
then id try 'ipconfig /release' then 'ipconfig /renew' if they arent the
same on the non-working machine

this will hopefully reset your machines DHCP lease with the provider and
give you the proper setting for DNS
hope this works, althou it could be other problems
 
heres what i would try next

ipconfig /displaydns <-- take note of contents displayed
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /registerdns

now i may be missing something easy here, but when i get a moment ill read
more into it. hope this fixes your problem...

just one last thing, check the settings of your network connection via the
GUI in control panel, you may have a DNS option checked your not supposed to,
etc.

Is this the host, or a slave?

Does it have entries for the DNS server, and the default gateway?
 
This is the slave or client computer that is giving me problems..We have got
3 pc on the network

1 host, 2 clients.......1 of the client is wireless laptop...it's the other
pc thats not connecting properly.

They are all on the network and I believe they are all sharing the
internet... but that one pc is not connecting properly..

I hope this is enough info....
 
In my home network (all static addressing) the clients are all pointed to
the 'server' IP as the primary DNS server and the default gateway. There
are no entries in the secondary DNS server tabs. The second (WAN facing)
NIC on the 'server' is pointed to the IP address of my firewall appliance as
the DNS server and default gateway. Finally the firewall appliance is a
DHCP client on the WAN.

In my office network (all DHCP clients) the client machines are all assigned
addressing in a similar manor by the DHCP server leading me to believe that
this is correct. I have drawn the conclusion that each device on the
network must look to the next 'down-stream' device for DNS resolution.
(Entering the 'real' Internet DNS servers into the clients most probably
will work because DNS quiries will then be routed to the default gateway
anyway but I don't think this is a recomended practice)

DNS resolution is affected by the LSP / Winsock subsystem.

If XP RTM or Service Pack 1:
1. Backup and delete the following registry keys:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock2
2. Reboot.
3. Open the network connections folder, right click your network connection, and
click Properties.
4. Click Install | Protocol | Add.
5. Click "Have Disk...", type "\windows\inf" in the box, and click OK.
6. Click "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)", then click OK.
7. Reboot.

If XP SP2:
1. Start - Run - "cmd".
2. Type "netsh winsock reset catalog" into the command window.

Give LSP-Fix <http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm>, WinsockFix
<http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=257>, or WinsockXPFix
<http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html> a shot.

If no help yet, reset TCP/IP.

accessible. you might not have permission to use this network resource." It
pings all pc's on the network and can be seen from the other pc's but can't
you access none of the files from the other pc 's

Now I have done some reading and it says that sometimes the antivirus
software messes up something and I might have to increase the IRPStackSize
value in the registry.... my friend says I should install XP again and it
will find whatever files are missing or corrupt and repair them is this
so?????As I am giving serious thought as to whether or not 2 do this.

The AntiVirus / IRPStackSize error is rather distinctive "Not enough server
storage is available to process this command.". When you get that message you
need to fix the other computer, ie the computer that you're trying to access.

There are several reasons for the "...not accessible..." error. Let's look at 3
computers to start, the one with the problem, and 2 that have no problem.

Provide ipconfig information for each computer.
1) Start - Run - "cmd".
2) Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" into the command window.
3) Open Notepad, make sure that Format - Word Wrap is NOT checked!.
4) Open file c:\ipconfig.txt from Notepad.
5) Copy and paste entire contents of the file into your next post.
6) Identify operating system (by name, version, and Service Pack level) with
each ipconfig listing.
