For some reason whenever I attempt to open an Exel file that is an attachment
in an e-mail message in Outlook XP I get a "The system cannot find the file
specified" from Outlook error message.

Would someone offer me ideas regarding what setting I have wrong either in
Outlook or Excel. Thanks.

Hi,

Please try the following steps to resolve this behavior:

1. Close the message.
2. Start Excel.
3. On the Tools menu, click Options .
4. Under the General tab, click to clear the ignore other applications option, and then click OK .
5. Quit Excel.

Test to see if you can now double-click the attachment to open it in Excel.
