Greetings Fran,

The Windows Messenger within SP2 no longer supports Hotmail, you'll need to install the
previous version to get this functionality back:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/messenger/download.asp

You'll get a message during the installation about a potential loss of functionality since
you're installing an older version, simply click "Yes" to this message.

MSN Explorer comes with Windows, you can use it or Internet Explorer (it's up to you).

I have windows XP home edition on my pc and have downloaded the new Service pack 2 with no
problems but I am a little confused. I have Windows Messenger , Windows Explorer and MSN
Explorer listed under my start menu documents.

The windows Messenger I used to access my Hotmail and communicate with my daughter but now it
only brings up my outlook express E-mail .

The Msn Explorer looks like an entire different software package that I log into with my
Hotmail Id and I can access hotmail , the internet ,contacts ,favourites calendar and lots
of neat things where did this come from ? Do I use this instead of Internet explorer to find
web pages and make it my home page ?

the windows explorer I know is a list of files on my Pc
I am totally confused please help and explain why so much to do the same thing

Thanks Fran

I have the same problem Fran. I click the my E-mail inbox selection on Windows Messenger and Outlook Express opens up. After a lengthy discussion with the Microsoft SP2 Chat Tech support personnel the problem appears to be that SP2 resets the Internet Explorer settings. Open Internet Explorer click Tools-Internet Options-Programs. Look down to the E-mail selection you will see Outlook Express and change that to Hotmail. That will cause Internet Explorer to open Up.

Two problems which I will pursue is that you are taken to the Hotmail start page rather than the Inbox. Another is when you now open Outlook Express you get the warning that Outlook Express is not your selected Email program, or something similar, and do you want to select it. If you select YES it changes the Internet Explorer Email selection back to Outlook Express and you are back to Outlook Express opening up whenever you try to use Messenger to get to Hotmail.

Hi,

Actually what you're doing here is a workaround; you could simply follow my intstructions to
retain full functionality.

Hi Fran,

SP2 is resetting Internet Explorer defaults among other things it makes Outlook Express your Email program. To get Instant Messenger (IM) to go to your Hotmail you need to open Internet Explorer, click TOOLS-INTERNET OPTIONS-PROGRAMS.

Where it says EMAIL select HOTMAIL from the box. Now exit the Internet Explorer program by clicking OK at the bottom of your screen.

When you now click MY E-MAIL INBOX within IM you will be taken to the Hotmail web page. Click MAIL to go to your inbox.

Now when you open Outlook Express it will warn you that it isn't your default message handler, or something to that effect. Where it asks if you want to make it your default click no or Internet Explorer will be reset and IM will bring up Outlook Express again. Also check the do not show this again box or the warning message will come up every time you open Outlook Express.

They don't make it easy. Microsoft says they are working on the problem.
