I would like to transfer files from a Win98 machine to an XP Pro
machine. The reason for this is that the Win98 machine is rather
screwed up.The Win98 machine is suffering from I don't know what.
Norton reports that TCP/IP is not loaded, even though it is on the
list in the control panel. I removed and re-loaded it, to no avail.
Anytime you start a browser such as IE, and try to call a web site,
you get an "illegal operation" message. I think it needs the "disk of
death" treatment. Unless anyone can suggest something else. Anyway.
Can I transfer files with Hyperterminal, in spite of these problems?
Or am I stuck with the sneaker system?
Thank You,

You might look at a Direct Cable Connection.

[[A direct cable connection is a link between the input/output (I/O) ports
of two computers by using a single cable rather than a modem or other
interfacing device. In most cases, you make a direct cable connection with a
null modem cable. You can use a direct cable connection to transfer
information between the computers to exchange files, access resources, and
so on.]]

OK, I'm letting you know.
I did not use Direct Cable because I did not see how that would circumvent the
problem I am having, namely, with the NIC and with TCP/IP. I did manage to get
Hyperterminal to work. As I write this it has transferred about 50000k of a
604564k zipped file. At 115200bps this is going to take a while! (On the plus
side, this process requires no attention!)
Now these other problems (NIC and TCP/IP): I have this feeling that it is a BIOS
conflict with the NIC. How to find out? The setup did appear to proceed
normally, but it crashes every time I take any action that would involve the
NIC, such as starting a browser. What if I just remove all communications
dohickies from Control Panel>Network, (Client for MS Networks, MS amily Logon,
adapters, etc. etc.) then re-load, or, remove them then install XP Pro (I
actually have a legal upgrade disk!) and let XP Pro take care of it? My
hesitation is that the Win98 installation on the computer in question was never
noted for its stability, so I am afraid that the XP Pro set up would inherit a
host of problems. Any Advice?
Thanx,

Hope this helps. Let us know.
