You haven't provided much information. What version of Solaris is "the
sun machine" running? Does it allow telnet sessions? What exactly are
you trying to do?

Its a serial port connection (i.e. terminal). Version of Solaris is
irrelevant.

Trying to log in to the machine on the console port.

OK, what happens when you try to access the Solaris box? Do you actually
make a connection and then lose the keyboard function? What I'm trying
to get at here is whether the issue is on the Windows XP box or on the
Solaris box perhaps denying the connection. As another thought, is the
keyboard you are using a standard one? If it isn't, try switching to a
regular ps/2 keyboard that doesn't need any fancy software to run.

Did what you are doing ever work before? Most *nix boxen won't allow
that sort of access by default; they need to be set up to run the
necessary services, user accounts created, firewall ports opened, etc.
So is your Unix box set up to accept the communication?

Are you using the Hyperterminal that comes with XP? Did you pick the
correct terminal emulation? You may need to upgrade to one of
Hilgraeve's more complete versions. The Hilgraeve tech support people
might be a good resource for you to help solve your issues. I asked you
about the version of Solaris to help determine if you could get tech
support from Sun. If you are just setting up the Solaris box and
haven't been able to do what you want, then checking with Solaris tech
support is also a good next step.

Got it working now by using the 'official' RJ45 supplied by Sun. It
seems the one I was using although perfectly good as an RJ45 network
cable didnt work too well in this instance.

That doesn't make any sense since an RJ45 ethernet cable has nothing to
do with the serial port which is how you said you were connecting ("I'm
connected to the sun machine via the serial port"), but it doesn't
matter. I'm glad you got things sorted.
