why do hyperlinks stop working.
I'm using msoffice applications and i set up hyperlinks and they work fine.However, when I go back to them at alater date they no longer function. the addressis not valid /check and try again.
How can the address be okay when I set it up and then not valid-I haven't deleted the file-in fact I have only opened it but not changed it.

Hi calm

What version of Word are you using?

Click within one of the problem hyperlinks, do Alt-F9. What text appears
between the brackets? (It should look something like { HYPERLINK
"http://www.microsoft.com" }

Thanks Shauna.
Missed your replyfor a couple of days.I'm using Windows XP Professional.
I tried alt f9 and got this: (HYPERLINK Sci4d.doc) -Sci4d.doc is the name of the document I'm trying to link to.Does this tell you anything ?
Thanks-help much appreciated.

Hi calm
Does this tell you anything ?

Yes. It tells us that the hyperlink doesn't know *where* to find the
document. Word has an idea about the "current folder". When the "current
folder" happens to be the folder where your Sci4d.doc is stored, then the
hyperlink works. When the "current folder" happens to be something else,
then the link won't work, because Word has no way of knowing where the
document is stored.

Solution: Click within the hyperlink. Insert > Hyperlink. In the address
field, give it the full address for your document (eg c:\my
folder\Sci4d.doc.

Hope this helps.

Andy,

You might try this. When you insert a hyperlink, Word is actually creating
a hyperlink field. If you toggle the display of fields to field codes
(Alt+F9), you'll see something like { HYPERLINK "address" }. Try nesting
the address portion of the HYPERLINK field as the result of a QUOTE field.
Select the address, including the quotation marks, and press Ctrl+F9 to
convert it to a new, nested field:

{ HYPERLINK { "address" } }

Now type "QUOTE " in front of the address as shown:

{ HYPERLINK { QUOTE "address" } }.

Toggle display of field codes back to field results (Alt+F9), select the
hyperlink, and press F9 to update the field. Does this still get converted
to a relative link?

Regards,
Chad

I am having troble with this too Shauna, as Even if I put in an absolute link
when I save the document Word seems to convert it to a relative one. This
means if I need to move the document to a different directory later, all the
link are wrong. Any ideas please?

Hi Chad

Thanks for the response.

I tried this and I put Quote in the hyperlink like you sugested. It accepted
it, but when I looked at it again <ALTF9> the "quote" I put in had gone.
After saving and re-opening the file, Word had changed it back to a relative
link again.

Andy..

<sigh> So much for our last hope.

Bummer. There's nothing worse than a "smart" feature that can't be turned
off or otherwise worked around. Thanks for testing it - I had conceived the
idea after reading other posts similar to yours but could not test it
because I'm on an earlier version than where the problem seems to have
appeared.

Chad

Guys

How can I moan to Microsoft about this, if enough of us grumble they might
put the reletive / Absolute Check box back.

Andy..

If you are in the mood for testing things, try putting the link
address in plain text in the body of the document, enclosing it in a
bookmark, and putting a REF field to that bookmark inside the
HYPERLINK field.

Hi Andy:
What if you enclose the Quote field inside quote marks. i.e.

{ HYPERLINK "{ QUOTE "address" }" }

instead of { HYPERLINK { QUOTE "address" } }

Surely if we get enough quotes in there eventually Word will realize we
*really mean it*!

I am trying to find a fix to this problem too. I tried the last suggestion
but that still does not fix the problem. I am willing to test somemore
things if there are anymore suggestions.

willing to try any other suggestions as how to fix this if anyone else has
something to try.
