Going crazy

I am working in Word 2003 professional. I am trying to insert a hyperllink.
First i tryed inserting a web address... it inserts the address but doesn't
link.
Next I tried hyperlinking to an existing file... same thing... inserted the
address but did not link. What is wrong.

I am not quite sure what you mean but if you mean that the url is not active
when you have copied and pasted it into the word document, then all you need
to do is place the curser at the end of the url and press the space bar. The
link should then become active. If you then right click in the url and in
the shortcut menu click 'edit hyperlink', you will then be able to type in
the top box the text you would like the hyperlink to display. Sorry if I have
misunderstood your question.

Well, let me try to explain it again. when I paste the address in ... either
an url or a the address of another file on my computer.... the address will
be displayed but there is no connection. When I try the same procedure at
home (where I'm using word 2000) I don't have any problem. It works like it's
supposed to. Is there something different with word 2003.. something I'm not
doing...

Does the inserted address look like this?

{ HYPERLINK "http://office.microsoft.com" }

If so, you have field codes displayed. Press Alt+F9 to toggle to field results.

It doesn't show the hyperlink.only the address... and when you click on it
nothing happens... whether it's a web site address or a file location
address... it shows the address but when you click on it nothing happens...

Ah, the light just came on.

Go to Tools > AutoCorrect Options > AutoFormat As You Type. Check the box for
"Internet and network paths with hyperlinks".

If you paste in an address, you'll have to type a space or punctuation after it
to make the substitution take effect.

Thanks... what about a hyperlink from another file, not a website... how do I
make that work?

When that option is turned on, you can put the cursor at the end of the address
and press the spacebar to make AutoFormat do its thing.

Or... you can turn on the same option on the AutoFormat tab of the dialog
(separate from the AutoFormat As You Type tab), and then click Format >
AutoFormat to run through the whole document. If you do that, you may want to
turn off all the other options in AutoFormat to avoid unexpected effects.
