HUGE EMAIL PROBLEM! Can't send/receive or connect!

I just purchased a new Sony laptop computer with windows vista premium. It
came pre-installed with Norton Internet Security (trial) which I removed
today. I also removed the trial versions of Microsoft Office and installed my
version of Pro, as well as Norton Antivirus from the University I attend.

When I attempt to use *ANY* email client, I can't connect to either pop3 or
smtp servers. I have attempted to use my gmail account (which has had pop3
enabled for months) and also my university account. It appears that outook
doesn't even ATTEMPT to connect, as it just instanly comes up with the
message "Log onto incoming mail server (POP3): Outlook cannot connect to your
incoming (POP3) e-mail server. If you continue to receive this message,
contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP)." (Same
message with SMTP)

I have disabled windows defender, windows firewall, and my antivirus, all to
no avail. Furthermore, I have used a computer that is connected to the same
network (running windows XP) and it can connect to any of the email servers.

What is going on!!

After lots of searching on the internet and a very frustrating night, I
finally fixed the probelm. The more I read about Norton AntiVirus Corporate
v10.2 (the version my university gave me for Vista), the more found people
having problems with it.

I reccomend uninstalling it and getting a different antivirus program if
this is what you're using... It's not that easy to uninstall however.... The
first time I uninstalled it, I could no longer connect to the intenet... I
did a system restore and won't ever attempt to put this "antivirus" program
back onto my computer, as in my eyes the program itself is a virus!
 
I was having the exact same problem on my new sony as well. It just started
happening after I updated Norton the other day. To fix it I opened norton,
clicked the Norton Internet Security tab at the top, then clicked on Run
Security Inspector and then on Configure. On the configure menu select
Program Control on the left under Personal Firewall. Scroll down the list to
WinMail and change the drop down tab to allow which should allow winmail
access through the firewall.

go to the norton web site and download their special uninstaller.
download either AVG or AVAST.
uninstall norton using the special uninstaller
install either AVG or AVAST.
norton is NOT compatible with vista.

I tried what you said. It worked very well.. I just had to add "winmail" in
to the programlist. I dont think all this negative comments about Norton is
fair..

All the negative comment about Norton and McAfee is certainly fair based on
their history of slowing down machines and causing trouble, including
deleting entire email folders.
 
The point is that if Norton was designed properly it shouldn't be necessary
for you to go in and manually add Windows Mail to the allowed programs list.
Many users have no clue how to do this.
