I made the mistake of allowing my sister to use my
computer, appearently she powered it down while connected
to the internet. Now when I try to go on line I get an
HTTP 500 error and a message stating that the page is
unavailable. I can get in on another computer (obviously
since I'm writing this) and I went through and found a
FAQ addressing this problem. It says to go to the
Microsoft Management Console for Internet Information
Server, I looked very hard for this, no joy. Today I
went looking for IIS or MMC and found that they seem to
have first appeared in Windows 2000 and later. I am
running 98se. I have tried to reinstall both my ISP
software and IE, both are now screwed up (they are both
looking for information from the internet and can not
retrieve it. So, any suggestions on how to get my
computer to speak Internet again? Do I need to reinstall
Windows (probably not possible since it came on the
computer and there are no disks)?

It could be thayour sistefound a nasty page that a.) made
bogus entries in your hosts file for some commong web
pages. I think the host file on Windows 98 is in
c:\windows\system. But it has been a while and I have no
system to check on it here.

b.) Your sister found a nasty web page that changed your
DNS settings for your ISP. If your are using DHCP make
sure that the TCP/IP properties show thayour system is
automatically getting it's DNS settings. If you do not
use DHCP check the DNS server settings to match those on
your other computer. Also make sure the gateway is the
same as the computer that is working.

I have the same situation. I have XP home edition. The
problem is caused by a Windows update. I sent an e-mail
to Microsoft. waiting for an answer. I cannot find the
Internet Information Server also. Maybe you can restore
your computer.
