.htpasswd and .htaccess files

I want to use password protection on my website, but when I try to upload the
..htpasswd file, a message appears saying it doesn't accept that extension.
Does anyone know of an alternative or how to fix this? I cannot change from
binary to ASCII (I do it in Internet Explorer). Anyone know?
