How can they be so huge? There must be a LOT of text as I can't believe that
huge number is accounted for by code. Alternately, are lots of images called
up by the page?

i. If it is text that makes up the bulk of the page, consider 'stripping
out' the HTML. Notetab Lite will do this and I know other programs have been
mentioned. You'll be left with a text file which might be easier to work
with in a plain text editor.

ii. If the issue is lots of code -- highly unlikely -- you're best solution
is still number i. above. I have seen programs that will break up large web
pages into smaller ones based on a common element, usually <h?>, but I can't
remember their names right now. Someone reading this post might recall it.

iii. If the issue is images, most browsers allow you to turn them off. You
usually have the option to view images individually via the context
(right-click) menu.

sorry, I didn't explain well
files are obviously OFF line, part of a huge 'lexicon' or dictionary
each file a letter
all together it's about 430MB of text no pictures (!)
I don't know WHO had this nice idea...
