I downloaded this to hopefully help with my shut down problems... but i'm not
sure how to get it running?
i click on it to open it.. and its window comes up .. and its just an all
"black" filled window.
and i'm unable to type in it.. even tho.. there's a blinking cursor mark
there ?!?!
sorry i'm so dumb.. can anyone point me in the right direction???
thank you very much

Where did you download it from? Have you gone back to the web site looking for
instructions or help?

Do you mean UPH Cleanup???
You got it from MS I hope.
Antioch

The service is set to automatically start when the computer boots so you
will
not need to start it manually.

To see if UPHClean is running...

Open Task Manager...
Ctrl + Shift + Esc | Click the Processes tab |
Click on Image Name to alphabetize |
Will be listed as uphclean.exe

Open Services...
Start | Run | Type: services.msc | Click OK |
Scroll down to User Profile Hive Cleanup.
If it is running it will say Started in the Status column.

Did you install it?

To automatically install it (you need uphclean-setup.msi):
- Double click the setup.msi

INSTALLATION PROBLEMS
=====================

If you get an error using the MSI installation package and the package is on
a
network share attempt the installation from a local drive. Another
alternative
is to use the manual installation instructions.

If you have problems with the installation check to see if the following
DLLs
are in your c:\winnt\system32 directory:

msvcp60.dll
msvcrt.dll

These files are commonly on computers because of other installed software.
If you are missing these files you can visit:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=259403

to download vcredist.exe which includes these files.

ok..yes.. i guess its working fine then.. i did download it from MS, and i
looked in task manager, and also in services.msc
i guess i was expecting to see a window with results ?!?! guess it doesnt'
work that way :o)
but sometimes my computer is still not shutting down.. and once in awhile it
will.
it is always hanging up on "windows shutting down.

I get these two events in the Event Viewer all of the time now...

Event ID 1001 UPHClean started
Event ID 1201 UPHClean The following handles in user profile hive
MYPENTIUM450\Wesley P. Vogel (S-...) have been closed because they were
preventing the profile from unloading successfully

You will most certainly have some also.

To open the Event Viewer...
Start | Run | Type: eventvwr | Click OK |
Click on system on the left

Some more events that you might see, from
UPHClean v1.6d readme.txt

3) Here the service is telling you that it closed handles that were
preventing
the profile from unloading:

they
were preventing the profile from unloading successfully:

profleak.exe (1444)

4) Here's what it looks like if there's a problem closing handle held by
application.

Event Type: Information

profleak.exe (1148)
HKCU\SOFTWARE\Policies (0xb0) error 6

5) Here the service is telling you that the user profile hive could not be
unloaded and that it will try again later. I expect that this will occur
if the 1211 event occurred. As I don't expect 1211 to occur I'd expect that
event id 1111 will not occur either.
