I'm considering the purchase of a new desktop and laptop. I would like to
know other users opinions and experiences with Dell and Toshiba desktops and
laptops. I've noticed that Dell And Toshiba computers that seem to have the
same features as their HP equivalents are $300 To $400 cheaper. Why is that?
Do Dell and Toshiba offer free chat support in and out of warranty? Another
thing I like about HP is their free online classes. I don't know if Dell or
Toshiba does that. Okay now-who is YOUR favorite company?

That one I can answer, at least for Dell. I got a Dell desktop about a
year ago. One month later, it wouldn't boot up. I found that Dell does
have chat support, and that it is *much* quicker to use that than to
wait through the endless telephone line. Of course, you have to have a
working computer to use the chat support. (I used my laptop.)

FWIW: the display on the console of the Dell indicated a RAM problem.
So they sent me four new sticks of RAM. Still didn't work. So they
sent a technician to replace the motherboard. *That* worked. But the
tech plugged the DVD drive into the wrong SATA port on the
motherboard. The one he used was turned off in the BIOS. I finally
figured it out after another unproductive chat session.

That is like asking which car brand is best. Everyone has an opinion, and all of them are bias
based on one or two experiences.
"db" give you a like to an impartial review. You can also google for other laptop reviews.
Note. All laptops use proprietary hardware and any repair will be expensive. You should consider
the 3 year extended warrantee on all laptops. I have a Dell laptop that has worked very well for 5
years. I have worked on Dell, Toshiba, HP, Compaq and they all seem to have the same number of
lemons and mostly good computers.
Go with what every you see as the most bang for your buck.

Currently I like Dell. Toshiba has been very good with making
laptops, although I dislike using laptops.

I've have a Dell laptop for almost four years and an HP desktop for
almost two years. No serious problems with either one. The Dell is a bit
slow, but I'm using Windows XP and Office 2007. I'm a bit surprised that
the Dell works at all as I only have 256 mb memory.

Both vendors chat support has been fine, mostly used out of warranty.

No experience with Toshiba computers, but my 10-year-old Toshiba VCR
still works...

We have had three Dell computers in this house, including the one I am
using right now. Satisfied with all of them, no real problems directly
attributable to Dell.

I know nothing of Toshiba computers, but they make excellent electronics
in other areas.

I have never owned an H-P computer, though the three people I have known
who owned them all complained about them. I have had for 2 years an H-P
printer. Mechanically, it is bulletproof, but their software blows chunks.

All of this FWIW, of course.

Thanks for your replies everyone!! I really appreciated the article on PC
World's website about buying a laptop. You've helped me make a decision (
sorry Dell fans, I decided in favor of HP because I've had virtually no
problems with ther stuff)!!
