hp scans white pages as shades of gray

using xp-home edition .My hp officejet pro 1170cxi worked great when i had windows98se. Now i did a hard drive format and fresh install of xp and my scanned document come in shades of gray or pink.
Hp says no printer dricvers necessary as they come in windows..but the results are terrible

any sugestions (besides using the printer to stop my boat from drifting)
 
adjust your black level.
