I lost my original copy of Precision Scan for this scanner - there is
absolutely nothing on the HP download site. Has anybody got advise on how to
run my scanner on Win XP Pro? The available drivers included in XP are very
very basic

I have no specific advice, but if I were in your shoes, the first
thing I would try would be to call or E-mail HP and ask them.

I did try this (sj166en.exe) )but could not get the sofware to work as it
kept throwing errors when I used the scanner (which did work perfectly under
WinME with precision scan). Long in the past I ditched the deskscan
software in favour of the far superior generic precision scan software that
HP issued. It appears they have withdrawn it for Scanjet 5P but it sdoes
exist for other HP scanners. Does anybody still have copy - it was a free
upgrade from deskscan????

Spend more time looking! There are two drivers listed that are compatible with almost all current version of Windows;

I am using version 2.9 of the DeskScan software with my 5p
scanner and WindowsXP. It seems to work fine. I am using an
Adaptec SCSI adapter instaed of the HP "scsi" card that comes
with the scanner if that makes any difference.

For what it's worth (and maybe not much to you, but thought I would
mention anyway), during a recent reshuffle of computers around here I
moved the HP 5p scanner from a Win 98 machine to a Linux machine using
software included with the distribution (Red Hat 9) and it works
terrifically well with much better control over the scan, at much higher
resolution, than I ever achieved using the HP software.

I too am using an Adaptec SCSI adapter which I had to get to use the Scanjet
with windowsME. Thanks TED for your reply but I did go right through the HP
site before including trying both of the workaropunds suggested. The second
has a link to another version of Deskscan 2.9 for a different scanner -
having installed it the readme notes do confirm it is appropriate for the 5p
BUT it does not function correctly either. When you scan a copy the quality
is appalling and only about 85% of the page width prints over the full page
width.

So I am still stuck - any more helpers please

There is a finale..................The deskscan software will work if you
disable the scanner in the device manager - the reasoning is complicated but
WindowsXP polling software doesn't work with the HP software because of the
'green button' on the scanner. You can also find version 2.03 of Precision
Scan as file sj675en.exe but it is a massive 95.2MB. However those nice nice
people at HP will SELL you the CD version.
Thanks for the followup! Appreciated! i'm downloading now.
