HP Pavillion won't boot up.

Last week I booted up my HP Pav. because my e-machine crashed. On sat. 5/14 it
was installing updates for XP when I left it. When I went to use it it was
down and
wouldn't restart. It is saying disk boot failure. I removed the hard drive
and put it in 2 other pcs but nothing will recognize it as a drive. Normally
you can do this operation and download valuable data. Any help on how to
restart it or reclaim my
data. I'LL TRY ANYTHING.

Sounds like a dead drive...You could try data recovery specialists but I bet
they're pricey. Depends on how valuable the data is I suppose, on whether or
not you're willing to pay to recover it. Check in your area for a shop.
It's doubtful that updates caused the crash, it's unfortunate that the drive
picked this time to conk out. Hardware can fail at any time, although you do
tend to get some hints it's coming. Although, you may not as well. However,
software doesn't cause hardware failure, the opposite can be true.

When you first power on the PC and the BIOS/post
messages come up, is there any indication that it's
recognized here? If the BIOS doesn't see it,
it might not even be spnning anymore.

I've had some fair luck recovering data from drives that sometimes the
computer isn't willing to recognize as a drive. But in that case, the data's
often pretty well scrambled and it takes quite a bit of time.

There is plenty of data recovery software on the net ranging from free to
really expensive. If the free stuff will do the job, you're in good shape.
If the expensive stuff is what's needed, you may be better off taking the
drive to a competent shop that has already invested in the software, and
you're just paying for time.

The other choice is a data recovery software company that will take the
drive apart in a clean room and get the data off. Figure it's going to cost
between $200 and $2000 for that sort of service, with the low end probably
just the diagnosis.

Hopefully you've backed up your data. You likely have a dead drive.
 
Chances are that only the circuitboard on the drive itself is shot. Chances
that the drive itself has gone or crashed are almost nil..There is nothing
inside the casing that will cause this. So, and only when everything else
has failed: try to replace the board from your drive with a another board,
same type, same make. It takes a little doing and guts. And remember this is
the last resort.

Wouldn't wrap that up with "can't" as I can easily see where software may
program registers etc. for hardware with bad values which may cause
overheating or other stresses on the hardware itself.
 
I tried everything but It must be the board. I tried one from another 80 GZ
drive and it would recogonize it but couldn't access it. The board was
slightly different.
I'll contact Western Digital a see if I can get a replacement. No great loss
if I can't.
