I just purchassed a new HP, and now each time on Gametap I try to
start games, it comes up with "searching for HP Document Viewer" any
ideas for this? I tried HP Online support, they said it was a driver
and registry problem, but what they suggested with the printer driver
and registry key didn't help. Anyone that knows the answer, the reply
would be appreciated.

It sounds like you either have not loaded the Gametap client or the
client has problems and Gametap functions are no longer associated with
it. Go to www.gametap.com and click on the Support link in the upper
right-hand corner.

Should have specified, it also happens with games other than ran
through Gametap, just straight Windows installed games as well. Some
work fine, others dont.

Yes, that information would have been good to have.

The First Question Of Troubleshooting: what changed between the time things
worked and the time they didn't?

It sounds like some file associations are messed up. You might want to look
at MVP Doug Knox's file association fixes here (after you answer the First
Question):

It actually started from the time the computer was taken out of the
box, less than 6 months ago. Running XP, with all updates etc, the
only thing I can figure, since HP Tech Support, has tried and tried to
help, but they haven't figured anything out, is that when the "Geek
Squad" did the Back-Up and installed the security system when I
purchased this system at Best Buy, maybe something was done
accidentaly.

This is what happens to give you an idea, basically, you start a game,
from it's exe file, the screen will turn dark, and it appears that the
into movie will soon be starting but it never does, and at the bottom
of the taskbar, a minimized window that says document viewer is then
there, the game never starts, and if you close the document viewer
window, the game aborts itself, and you find yourself back at you
desktop. Like I said, this only happens with certain games, mainly
stuff that is two or so years old, I have never had a problem with
anything newer. Yes, these are legal game copies as well, I have the
original CD's, except for the ones through Gametap of course, which I
am a BETA Tester for.

Are you sure the HP Document Viewer is running or is it trying to install?
If the latter, try the MS Installer Cleanup Utility:

Resolving problems with the Windows installer -

Windows Installer Fix (Line 94) -
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

According to Google, the HP Document Viewer is part of their All-In-One
printer software. Do you have an AIO printer? If not, go to Add/Remove
Programs and uninstall the HP pre-installed AIO printer drivers. See if
that helps.

If the Document Viewer is really already installed and running, then try
Doug Knox's fix.

I finally got ahold of someone at HP tonight who knew what they were
talking about, and had it fixed in about 30 seconds. Basically, when
the computer was at the factory, it was a bum install it appears,
because I could prove it was like this from the start, sent me the
program, and works perfect now. Their document viewer he explained
has been basically known in older versions to almost uninstall itself,
this appeared to be the problem, but it is now cool, and everything is
working...YEAH!

Excellent! I'm very glad you got it sorted. Thanks very much for posting the
solution; it will help some poor soul in the future.
