My HP722C hasn't printed since I had my hard drive
cleared and reinstalled, along with Windows XP (upgrading
from ME). When a command is sent to print, the file
shows up in the queue as "printing" for approx. 30
seconds, then disappears. The printer makes no start-up
noise when files are sent to print. Bi-directional
communication was disabled months ago to cure another
problem, so printer won't tell me what is wrong. I've
searched the HP site for downloads, but am given the
message that the driver included with XP is the most up-
to-date. Any suggestions? Should I give up and buy
another printer? Thanks for any help anyone can give.

I have the same printer and it is working fine. I just got a new PC with XP
home and did a simple add printer and the XP drivers work fine. Have you
tried deleting the drivers and the printer and doing a clean install?

My HP722C has always worked perfectly with XP. My first strategy would be
to uninstall it (delete from printers) and re-install it (add printer, or
maybe XP will just discover it after a reboot).

I'd give up an buy another printer. That printer is from about 1998,
and while it was a spectacularly good printer at the time (in fact, for
a time it was THE BEST printer), it's now ancient history. Printers are
dirt cheap: OfficeMax has had factory refurb HP 5550's for $60, and
that includes the black and color cartridges ($30 each .... effectively,
the printer was free). There is SO much difference between something
like the 5550 and the 722 that I wouldn't put much effort into the 722.
Also, it's time to give it up for the parallel printer interface, and
I don't recall if the 722 had USB, I don't think that it did.
