I am having problems with my HP CD-writer cd16v. Is there a newsgroup
for HP cd problems. Could someone tell me the significance of the different
speeds listed on the cd packets when I purchase them. I've seen 4X multi
speed, 24X multi speed, 12X multi speeds.

I don't have any that say multi speed, but CD-R's are made to be burned at
different speeds. If it says High Speed 1x - 32x means the max burning speed
you should use is 32X. CD-RW's are usually slower, I have seen some that are
only 1x - 4x. I would think by now these drives would sense this
automatically and adjust the speed. But may be not, I always check it and
have the default burn speed set at 24X and buy CD's at 24x or faster.
As far as a HP newsgroup, I would look at HP's support page or search on
Google.
Good luck.

Wow that was a quick response. I appreciate that. I found a newsgroup
called Alt.cd-rom and posted there also. I have some CD-RW 4X -12X and had
no problem and I've also used CD-R 1x - 24x with no previous problems, but
now I can't get this size to work for me. My husband bought some CD-RW
1X -4X and I can't do anything with these either. Whenever I click on
properties for the CD drive it says:
TYPE: CD Drive
File System: Unknown
Used space: 0 bytes
Free space: 0 bytes
Capacity: 0 bytes

How can I set the burn speed that you mentioned. I appreciate your help.
Will also do a Google search.

Thanks, Donna J.

Just wanted to say, that I was able to find lots of info doing the Google
search as you recommended.
Still reading it all.

Thanks bunches, Donna J

If you are using XP's burning program it is limited to only a few options
when using RW's, see
http://aumha.org/win5/a/xpcd.htm
On your 1x - 24x CD-R's if you try to burn can you tell what speed it is
trying to burn at? shouldn't be over 24x.

You will be a lot happier with a third party program like Nero or Roxio.
The only software I am familiar with is Roxio's Easy CD Creator, and it has
an option for the burn speed just before you click the second Record button.
Version 7 is suppose to be awesome.

Thanks again, still haven't quite figured things out. Will check out the
URLs you gave me.

Thanks, Donna J.

DCC,
Thanks for sending me these URLs. They are excellent. I did lots of
reading and then did some fiddling around with the cd-drive. It was a long
process, but well worth it. One of the changes I made was I right clicked on
my cd-drive then Properties, AutoPlay, and unchecked the box Actions: select
an action to perform, and then I checked the: Prompt me each time to choose
an action. It's working now, isn't that great? Thanks so much for steering
me in the right direction.

Thanks again, Donna J

DCC,
Oh I doubt that. But, I can honestly say that I know lots more about it
now than 24 hours ago.

Thanks again, Donna J

That's Great, now you probably know more about it than me.
Thank You, DC
