I had al older version of Word2000 that used to update the cross-reference
from one footnote to other footnote (very common in papers). The update was
made when I closed the file and then opened it again. I cannot do that with
the Word 2003?

Some fields that used to update automatically no longer do (this change was
made for security reasons, I understand). But if you Ctrl+A, Ctrl+F9, they
should be updated. And they will update at print time if you have the
appropriate option checked on the Print tab of Tools | Options.

"Ctrl+A, F9" might work better.
