I have a brand new notebook that has xp home. What is
the most reliable way to upgrade it to xp pro? Is this
topic some where in microsoft's web site? I couldn't find
it. Thanks in advance...Steve
First thing to do is to ensure that you have an actual need for at
least one of the specific functions or components that are found only
in XP Pro and not in XP Home. See the following web sites for a list
of the differences:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/whichxp.asp
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/howtobuy/choosing2.asp
http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_home_pro.asp
Both Home and Pro are produced from the same code base and there is
zero difference in performance or stability between the two.
If your notebook is *brand new* as in purchased within the last 72
hours or so then contact the vendor/manufacturer about exchanging it
for the same model with XP Pro installed. That would probably be
cheaper than purchasing the XP Pro separately.
Otherwise you could purchase the retail upgrade version of XP Pro and
install that. It will preserve any preinstalled OEM software that
came with your XP Home and it will have the proper drivers etc. for
the Notebook's hardware from the XP Home install.
Good luck
