Hi,
My Samsung CD ROM (Model SC-152L) gives me a lot of problem. It doesn't
read CD RW media. I want to update its firmware. There is an update
available for it on the manufcaturer's website. Although the site gives
info about updating it on WIN 98 and 95 os's, there is no mention how
to do it on XP.
The info available at the end. I tried to update it in Safemode with
Command Prompt and failed. Can you suggest a way?
Thanks in advance,
Abcclt

How to upgrade your firmware in Dos mode.

Donwload firmware file to the Directory(C:)

Reboot your pc.

When you press F8 in Boot, Windows95/98 Start-up menu will be
displayed.
(In case of window me/2000 , They are not supported in Dos
mode, please boot
using booting disket/cd)

When you see windiws95/98 start up menu, you can find "Dos prompt
mode or
Command prompt only". Then please choose this mode and boot in
Dos mode.

When the booting is finished in Dos mode, please move to the
Directory(c:)that you
downloaded firmware file.
(Write C:W>CD "DIRECTORY NAME" to move to Directory in Dos
mode)

After moving to the Directory which contain firmware file, run
"F11981.hex" and you
can see some displayed options then please put some option as
your needs.
(ex: F11981 3 W filename.hex)

[About number]
2 -> PRIMARY SLAVE(If your drive set up in primary slave,
please write number 2)
3 -> SECONDARY MASTER(If your drive set up in secondary
master, please write
number3)
4 -> SECONDARY SLAVE(If your drive set up in secondary slave,
please write
number 4)
When you write number, please check your drive's connection.

[About "R", "W"]
"R" is to check your present firmware in your drive, "W" is to
upgrade your
firmware in your drive.

If you got the message"firmware upgrade is finished", power your
pc off and reboot
your pc. (Caution: when power the pc off, not to click "

If it gives update details for win9* it most be seriously old, perhaps you
ought to buy a new one.
In any case if you try to update and it goes wrong you'll need a new one
anyway

Hi, what You can do is use XP to make a dos bootable floppy disk. Then
copy all the associated files to it.

(Windows key+E, right click on 3 1/2" floppy (a:), select format, check
"make dos bootable disk")

Then copy all of the files you downloaded to that disk. Boot the
computer from the floppy drive.

Follow the instruction from my mark onward. I made some edits.

PS: don't you just LOVE it when the guy who transaltes the instructions
to english is either computer illiterate, grammatically challanged, or
(in this case) both.

..hex??? You can't run that! the file is probably a .exe

and you

that's better. The .hex is a PARAMATER, not an executable. The .hex
file has got to be on the floppy you made somewhere.

Abcclt,

Do you have a CD Burner & burning software such as Nero? Nero has the
capability to make a Bootable CD-ROM in case a Floppy Drive isn't an option.
Not sure if Windows Media Player can also do this.

WiMP can't, Pretty much just does Audio files.

There are many burning programs besides Nero that can make bootable
CDs.

An alternate approach is to borrow a friend's system. Bring beer :)

What files shall I put on the cd rom to make it bootable?
My Nero has two bootable cd options. One "Make EFI Bootable CD" other
than the normal "Make Bootable CD" option.

The second one should work.

Include the firmware files on the CD.

Hi Paulmd,
Failed in that way. Made a bootable disk with the firmware files on it
and booted. but the dos doesnt recognise the firmware files on the cd.
They are not listed with dir commands, either.

At this point, quit mucking with the firmware and spring for a new
drive....
