I don't find any utility for installing and re-installing directx in help
files (not in 'install/remove programs' utility etc). My local computer
vendor has recommended me doing this to troubleshoot instability problems
with a new vid card. probably a simple thing to do, but I don't find XP to
be as accessable as other windows versions. Info often seems hidden or
solutions without many 'user' alternatives etc, IMO. Thanks.

Try here, it is a beta version and I have not tried it. It claims
compatibility with DirectX 9 and windows XP. Make sure you have version 8 or
whatever available to install.

As has always been the case, there is no supported means
uninstalling this, or any version, of DirectX. Do as you were warned
to do on the web site from which you downloaded DirectX9: perform a
system restoration using the restore point you created before
downloading and installing the DirectX 9. This will also restore your
original DirectX 8.1 files, which are incorporated into WinXP.

If it's been more than 90 days since DirectX was installed, and
you therefore have no pertinent Restore Point, the only supported
method of reverting to DirectX 8 would entail reinstalling the OS.

Before doing that, have you ensured that you're using the most
recent video drivers supplied by the video adapter's manufacturer?
Does the video adapter's manufacturer offer any information on their
support web site that relates to your specific problem(s)?
