how to turn off "smart" formatting

In A1:A10:
-Type in some text.
-Format as Bold and Underlined.

In A11 (unformatted), type in a word and hit enter.

On my machine, the formatting is automatically changed to
Bold and Underlined.

Is there a way to turn this "smart" feature off?
