How to turn off a keyboard annoyance?

I formatted and reinstalled Windows last weekend. Everything is
running fine, but the keyboard is doing one thing extremely annoying
now. Maybe someone can help me to turn it off.

I hope I can make my problem clear. This problem works in a lot of
programs; MS Word, Thunderbird, Notepad etc etc etc.

Before the format when I type a character like " it got on the screen
immediatelly and without any problems. Now I have to follow the " up
with a space. If I don't do that it assumes I want to use the " as the
start of making a special character. In the past I could easily type
"e - but now if I don't type a space between " and e I get: ë
This problem worth with other characters besides " too - like ^ and `

Does anyone know how I can fix this? I know it's only a small thingy,
but as I am not used to it, I find it extremely annoying :)
 
I don't know if this will solve it or not, but go to
control panel->Regional and Language options
and make sure everything there is correct.

You're using the US-International keyboard layout, which is
provided to facilitate typing special characters like ä. This can
be turned off in Control Panel | Regional and Language Options |
Languages | Details | Settings.

It's when I look at "text service and input languageïts on
US-International. That does match the keyboard I use (a logitech
wireless one). I toyed around in these settings a while before I
posted here, but It didn't fix the problem.

AH! I set the keyboard layout to standard US now and that fixed it. I
didn't know this was because of the international lay out. Thank you
very much!!

How to get US default keyboard behaviour in win 7

That answer does not work in Windows 7. It was the first thing I tried but the US keyboard has the same special key behaviour as the US International keyboard. There appears no way of getting the keyboard to work as normal for us in the US. Any advice would be appreciated.
 
crtl + Shift or Alt + shift turns off those characters can't remember which it is but one of those combos does it. It works in Win 7 cause it had to be turned off earlier on my laptop.
