Working in an office environment, setting up a new notebook and having
the XP setup music blaring (especially when the volume controls don't
work yet on the notebook) is quite irritating. Does anyone know if
there is a key combination that will stop the music from playing?

Thanks

Hi
Go to Control Panel/Sounds and Audio Devices then Sounds tab. Select the
program event you want to silence and then select "none".

Bill

The notebook should have a "MUTE" function key. Press it, or check
notebook manual for instructions.

Every laptop I've seen in recent years has a mute button.

He could also go into control panel > Sound and audio devices and change
sounds for certain events or mute the sound entirely.

Once one has fully booted into Windows and can access the Control
Panel, the setup music will have already finished. The sound that the
OP wants to eliminate cannot be controlled (via the OS) at the time at
which it occurs. The only way to silence it is to mute or otherwise
physically silence the speakers.
