Hello,
can anyone please advise on how to get rid of this update balloon!!!

A friend of mine has service pack 2 installed on his pc and every now and
then he gets this pop up message, "your computer maybe at risk..". This is
because he has turned off his automatic update. Reason is, he is using the
telephone line which is very slow and downloading/installing the updates
take a very long time. Once started, it becomes a never ending story. The
pc is mainly for his email.
It is now so irritating and, the question is How can he get rid of the
balloon popping up everytime.
Definitely not uninstalling SP2 - I guess.
thanks.

You might want to try the following:
Go to Control Panel and double click on Security Center.
In the left hand column, click on "Change the way Security
Center alerts me".
In the box that pops up, remove the check mark from the box
next to Automatic Updates.

To disable Balloon Tips, you'll have to create a Registry key.

1. Go to Start --> Run, type: "REGEDIT" (without quotes) and click OK.
2. Navigate to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced
3. Right click anywhere in the right hand pane and choose "New" --> "DWORD"
and call it "EnableBalloonTips" (without quotes). It will automatically get a
value of "0", so all you have to do next is to close the registry editor and
reboot.

To re-enable Balloon Tips, right click the key you created, choose "Modify"
from the menu and then change the "0" into a "1".

He doesn't need to disasble balloon tips to turn off the security center
warning.
