Hello,

Windows XP sp2

I have Real One (Player whatever) on this machine which is useful only now
and then, but it constantly loads with startup or pops up pester boxes. In
the old days you just deleted something from a startup menu, but I don't see
anything in that regard now.

How do I get this or other apps out of startup on XP to only be seen or
heard from when I want them?

Tools > Preferences > Automatic Services. Go to Message Center (at the
left panel), click to "Configure Message Center", and uncheck "Check for
new messages."

Tools > Preferences > AutoUpdate. Uncheck "Automatically download and
install important updates."

Tools > Preferences > Uncheck "Internet /Privacy"

And you may or may not need to disable a startup entry in msconfig
called TkBellExe (realsched.exe).

There is an option that it installed in the registry:

TkBell.exe

It's under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Run

You can also use MSCONFIG, the Startup Tab and uncheck it and make it
permanently unchecked.

In most cases, with "well-mannered" applications, it's usually as
simple as opening the undesired program and deselecting the option to
"display icon in the system tray" or to "start when Windows starts."

Additionally, Look in the C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start
Menu\Programs\Start Up and C:\Documents and Settings\username\Start
Menu\Programs\Start Up folders, and in the system registry, primarily in
the HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and
HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run keys.

Thanks... took the msconfig route but, as I told NewScience, I'm not sure if
it went right. If not, I may try the site (or might try it anyhow just to
see it).

Thanks again.

Thanks.

I found those entries (or as near as I could find) and then the msconfig on
a number of items... I'm not sure if all went well as per my reply to
NewScience.

Thanks.

I found the entries in RealOne and changed them and then also went to
msconfig and researched and unchecked a number of items there, but:

When I restart, Windows keeps sending me back to msconfig telling me that it
is in diagnostic mode and when I verify that the stuff is unchecked that I
want unchecked it just keeps doing it unless I exit without restarting.

If I tick the box that says not to show this again, will it just begin
startup the way I want it from now on? Is there a negative side to that?

Thanks again to those who replied for the suggestions.

Msconfig was designed to be a troubleshooting tool, not a "startup
configurer." Use MSConfig to determine the location of the command that
is attempting to start the program, and remove it. To cease the
selective startup notifications, either return your settings to the way
they were, or permanently remove the undesirable programs from your
startup configuration.

How do I get this or other apps out of startup on XP to only be seen or
heard from when I want them?

First step should be to check in the options for the program you don't want
to start and see if there is a setting to tell it not to run at startup.
The next step is to remove any entries you don't want from the two startup
folders:

C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

For anything else uncheck their entries in the startup tab of msconfig:
Start | Run | Msconfig | Ok

Another option is to remove the reference to them from one of these keys in
the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce

Make sure you have a backup of the registry using a program like ERUNT
before making any changes to the registry.
