How to stop looking for email when PC shuts down

Outlook looks for emails when commanded but ALSO looks again when I close the
PC. The scan progress pane shows the two basic commands repeated - the first
pair actuate on command and the second pair when the PC is shut down.

You don't state your Outlook version so the following is for OL 2002/2003.

Click Tools>Options>Mail Setup>Send/Receive. Uncheck "Perform and automatic
send/receive when exiting"
