My Favorites folder in Documents and Settings (W2000, IE5.5) is mirroring a
folder on a shared server. I want to remove the directory from favorites
without deleting the source files. In a test, deleting a file from Favorites
deleted it from the source directory as well. Pleease help.

Hmm you must have this folder appearing in:

C:\Documents and Settings\%profile%\Favorites.

I suppose what you could do is just go to that folder in Windows Explorer | right-click choose Properties | General | click Hide. Then you won't see it when you open Favorites from IE.

Thanks. This worked.
