How to stop automatic dial-up.

I know this is dumb, and I'm haunted by the suspicion
that I'm only one or two clicks away from solving the
problem -- but I don't know how.

Every time I boot up, Windows XP automatically dials my
internet service provider. Cancelling doesn't help
because it simply redials after 60 seconds.

How is it possible to "tell" Windows not to dial my
connection to the net until I request it?

Go to Tools on your IE page and select Internet Options -
Connections and check if 'Dial when a network connection
is not present' is selected. If so, deselect and
choose 'always dial my default connection'.
