1. Click "Start", and then click "Run".

2. In the "Open:" box, type "control userpasswords2" (without the quotes), and then click "OK".

3. In the dialog box that appears, uncheck "Users must enter a user name and password to use
this computer" check box, and then click "Apply, "OK".

You could also have TweakUI do it for you.

Can't recall username/password which apparently was set at time of original
purchase about 5 yrs. ago (sony VAIO w' pre-installed XP). Hasn't been
turned off since I can't remember; only Re-started. So no need for UN/PW. But
in running Norton Antivirus 2010 scan, somehow got turned off. Now at Alt,
Ctl, Del, screen is looking for UN/PW. Anyone know how to get around???

Google is your friend. See what you get when typing this into a Google
search box:

Forgot windows password

Google "Offline NT Password and Registry Editor"

This little linux utility will let you reset passwords, enable the
administrator account and lots of helpful stuff.

There most certainly *is* a need for a username and password. There are in
fact several good reasons, most for security. One reason is that, by
default and for security resons, the Windows Task Scheduler won't run tasks
on local accounts that have blank passwords. For example, scheduled
backups or virus scans may not run.

Windows updates can also restart the system. So can power outages.

If it's XP Home, log in to the Administrator account in Safe Mode and reset
the user account password.

Otherwise, use a password reset boot CD.

If you really feel that you don't need to have a secure password, set the
password hint at the time that you create the password.
