Hi,

I am running Windows XP on my laptop and the main computer
at our house is running ME. The main computer is also
hooked up to our printer. We are connected to the
Internet through the phone line. Before, I was able to
network with the main computer (w/my old laptop running
ME). Now, I cannot establish a network connection with
the main computer. How would I go about with this?

Thanks.

Joe,

Can you ping each computer from the other? By name and by ip address?

Make sure the browser service is running. Control Panel - Administrative Tools
- Services. Verify that the Computer Browser service is started.

Is this Windows XP Pro? If so, check to see if Simple File Sharing (Control
Panel - Folder Options - View - Advanced settings) is enabled or disabled.

If SFS is disabled, check the Local Security Policy (Control Panel -
Administrative Tools). Under Local Policies - Security Options, look at
"Network access: Sharing and security model", and ensure it's set to "Classic -
local users authenticate as themselves".

If you set the Local Security Policy to "Guest only", make sure that the Guest
account is enabled, and has a non-blank password. If "Classic", setup and use a
common account with identical password on both computers.

Enable NetBIOS Over TCP/IP (NBT) on both computers:

Are you running both Client for Microsoft Networks, and File and Printer Sharing
for Microsoft Networks, on both machines?

Please post ipconfig information for each computer.
Start - Run - "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" - Open c:\ipconfig.txt in
Notepad, copy and paste into your next post.

Cheers,
Chuck
Paranoia comes from experience - and is not necessarily a bad thing.
