How to set tabs when using a blank layout?

I selected a blank layout. Since I am not in any text box or placeholder,
the different types of tabs for the ruler won't show. In order to get around
this, I had to insert a table (1x1) for the tab types to show. May be I
should have chosen the title only layout and expand the text box. Any
comments or ideas?
 
No. I want to set tabs to align text. e.g. I want to set the left tab and
the decimal tab to show the following:-

Excel 98.50%
Word 97.50%

If I have a blank layout and not in any "box," the tab types (left, central,
decimal etc.) won't show on the ruler. That's why I have to create a 1x1
table just to see the tab types. I tried to insert a text box, but I
couldn't expand the size.

Is there a better way? Thanks.

If you draw a textbox using the icon on the drawing toolbar, drag using the
whole width of the slide then release the mouse button. Don't just click.
When you do that you will have a textbox and in the ruler you will be able
to select tabs and set them clicking in the ruler at the appropriate place.
While typing the box will expand automatically every time you hit enter the
height will increase, but no matter how much text you type will never exceed
the width you set.
If you make a table, which is a good alternative, set your tabs the same way
and use CTRL+TAB to get to them and type in your text. If you don't want the
lines to appear select the table and apply no border. You will find a button
on the borders and tables toolbar next to the border coler button
 
Do the following:
1. Create a TextBox on the blank slide.
2. Add the following text in it: (note that there are tabs between the word
and the letters)
Excel 98.50%
Word 97.50%
3. If you do not see the ruler, show it by selecting "View" | "Ruler" menu
item.
4. You can now set the "decimal" tabs on the ruler. The letters will
automatically align properly.

Thank you for being so detailed. It is interesting to find out that within
a placeholder one needs to press tab ONLY while in a table one needs to press
CTRL + tab.

Can't thank you enough for pointing out the fact that the text box will
expand in height automatically, same as autofit option for a placeholder. I
was trying to do the impossible i.e. to expand the HEIGHT by clicking and
dragging the white dots. I am so used to the text box within WORD and
thinking that it's the same with PP. I also realize that the PP text box has
the rotation handle whereas the one for WORD doesn't have.

By the way, is it correct to assume that there is no alternative to setting
tabs? I must use the ruler, right? I searched for a tab dialogue box in PP
because there is one for WORD. Guess no such luck. Okay, will do a better
job unlearning now.
