shared folders in win xp ???

could someone plz plz plz email me the answer - THANX !

The security model in windows XP is different than
Windows 9x, so instead of setting up password for shared
folders we setup computer accounts on XP and then set
permissions for these users.

I will use the following example to explain in detail:

Lets say i have my Windows XP Pro machine named 'MyXP'
and I want to share a folder named 'Folder1' with my
family members who have their own computers.

When they connect to folder1 on my computer, my computer
will try to authenticate them by looking for their
username and password on my computer. If username and
password do not match it will prompt them to provide
alternate username/password.

So to allow my family members access to folder1 I will do
the following:

1- Create a user on my computer and name it "FamilyMember"
2- Set Sharing permissions on Folder1 so
that "FamilyMember" has access.
3- Set NTFS permissions (if File system is NTFS) to
allow "FamilyMember" access.
4- Tell them that when they connect to my computer they
can use username=FamilyMember and also the password that
you have set for them.

I hope the above is not too confusing :)

Good explaination Ali.

Allow me to add that your example works as given
when the XP Pro is not using Simple file sharing.

If the XP Pro is using Simple sharing, or if the machine
is XP Home which can only use Simple sharing, then
your example needs to be modified at step 3 so that
NTFS permissions are granted to Guest instead of to
FamilyMember.
