Hi All,

I have a computer with a lot of USB drives of one sort or another
(memory sticks, card readers, etc.).

How do I tell XP that I want the first drive letter it assignes to
one of these to start at J: and go from there (J, K, L ...)?
(I want my CD drive to stay at D: but will compromise if I
have to.)

Many thanks,

One solution is to insert each (one at a time) and use DiskMgmt.Msc
to Change the Drive letter to your preferred Letter. On next use, XP
will retain and use that same letter. This can be complicated by the
fact that plugging devices into different sockets (ports) may cause XP
to re-enumerate the device and automatically assign a new/higher letter.

To access Disk Management:
Click Start, Run (Type) Diskmgmt.Msc [Enter]

It's also complicated by the fact that even if you do use the same USB
port(s) for the same drive(s) Windows sometimes changes the drive
letters anyway. I've seen that a bunch of times and I've seen it in
Win2K, too.
