How to schedule automatic update checking?

In expectation of SP2, I turned on "Automatic Updates" but only went so far
as having the downloads done automatically without the automatic install.

I can see that the full automatic download & install allows me to set a time
of day for the operation to be performed, but not for either the check-only,
or the check and download.

So, when will my machine look for updates? When will it try to download what
it finds?
