Wordperfect had a function that allowed me to put a place mark in a document.
The next time I opened the document, Wordperfect would automatically bring
me to that place in the document.

Can I do that in Word 2003, and if so, how? I will appreciate advice.

If you made some change at the point you want to return to, just press
Shift+F5 (the GoBack command). It cycles through the last three edits.

If you're not editing, then use the Insert > Bookmark command to
insert the mark. On reopening, use Ctrl+G (the GoTo command) and
select the bookmark by name. Bookmarks have many other uses in Word
besides just marking a place -- look them up in the Help.
