How to restore the default settings for embedded objects

Somehow I've managed to alter my default settings for embedded objects such
that they display the field code (eg. { EMBED Excel.Sheet.8 } or { SHAPE \*
MERGEFORMAT }) instead of the object image of an inserted file or graphic. If
I select all and use CTRL+SHIFT+F9 and save this fixes the problem but only
for the file at hand. Any previous file with an embedded object now reverts
to displaying the field code. How do I get WORD 2003 to revert the setting
back to the original setup?

Check in Tools, Options, View, Field Codes is not checked.
Also to toggle all field codes in the document in one go, Alt+F9.
If the codes are locked, then use Ctrl+Shft+F11 to unlock.
Hope this helps

Dean - many many thanks !!!! You were spot on, in Tools, Options, View,
Field Codes was checked. I thought it was an option but just couldn't see it.
Really appreciate the quick response!
