Recently clock appears slowing down so I want to replace the battery on
the mobo. My question: Is the BIOS reset by doing this? If so, is there
a way to do it without resetting the BIOS?

Do it quickly and it should NOT forget it settings.
Note that some motherboards use soldered, recharchable, batteries.

Before you change the battery, first take note of whether you are losing
time while the computer is running or while it's powered off. If it's while
powered off, the problem *is* very likely the battery. But if it's while
running, it can *not* be the battery, because the battery isn't used while
the computer is running.

When you remove the battery, you usually have 15 minutes or so (sometimes
more, sometimes less) to replace it before the BIOs settings are lost. In my
view you shouldn't rely on this and should make sure you have a hard copy of
all the settings to refer to if you should have to manually reenter them.

In fact, my view is that everyone should *always* have such a hard copy,
even if you are not changing the battery, just in case.

I have taken up to a minute to replace a battery and the settings have been
remembered.

Most often it's a cr2032 battery. Easy to change, in most cases.

...because the battery isn't used while the computer is running.

I've never thought much about this, but... does this mean that if you leave
the computer running 24/7 that your CMOS battery would last *virtually*
forever?

The power supply is used when the system is shutdown. The battery is used when the power
supply is not supplying to the system. The CMOS settings will be remembered while the
battery is being changed due to capacitance charges supplying enough power for the CMOS RAM
to keep their state during the short time frame.

All batteries have a life. In very dry air, a long life. In humid air a shorter life. Due
to a slight, put present load (very high resistance), of the motherboard on the battery it
will have a shorter life then then shelf life but it will loose its charge as a function of
time just as *any* battery will. That is why some motherboard will utilize recharcheable
batteries instead of Lithium batteries.

I bought a new HP computer from Circuit City in December, installing it on
Jan 16, 2006. It is not performing well at all. I have had over 4 others, two
brand new before this. This computer has a problem with the time entry on it,
drops 2 hours a lot, it is connected 24 hours a day to high speed internet,
Time Warner's Roadrunner. It also, constantly quits on various programs,
especially email. They had installed a Norton Security system free on here,
and when I totally removed it, nothing would work, as it said a SKU112 was
now missing. Had to reinstall it and disable it as I do not want it on here.
That item missing was sonnected to something referred to as cComfort.exe????
Which is what all of my email stoppage refer to and which is being addressed
now on all forums, the error numbers range from 0x 800CCCOD,OE,OF, and so
forth.
Please comment...can it be the battery??????
