Hi,
My Windows XP registry is corrupt and when I try to login
as Administrator or my user it does recongnise my
passwords and lets me logs on BUT then drops right back to
the login screen. I am using a Toshiba Portege 3500.

I want to try repairing the registry through the Windows
XP setup option R process. When I try this it asks me to
enter my Administrator Password, which does not recongnise
the valid password.

Can anyone please help advise me how to repair my registry?

Thanks in advane
Joe

First, check that your security event log is not full, as it is
possible to have the security event log configured to not
overwrite event messages when the log is full, and in that
case you will see just what you are reporting.
However, such things as a login script that bombs can
cause this.

If you cannot do a repair/upgrade install entering the
password of your admin account, then it is likely that
you account is not the built-in Administrator account.
That is the account whose password it prompts for.

So, if this is true it means that if you know the password
of the built-in, or it is still blank, then you should be able
to do a normal login with that account. If you can do this
then defining a new account and transferring as much as
you can from your now corrupt to the new may be a better
option than an upgrade/reinstall.

Also, if the issue is with this one account, in its startup
sequence, then a repair/upgrade install is not likely to
solve your issues. Such an install will fix the basic system,
but by its very intent it leaved defined accounts and install
software as is as best it can.

At the Welcome screen you should be able to do an
alt-cntrl-del-del to get the old login dialog, into which
you can enter any account name and corresponding password.
The built-in Administrator account is often left by OEMs
with a blank password, which you (or someone) would have
had to change for it to be otherwise now. This built-in can
however be renamed, so it may no longer by Administrator.

Hi Roger
Many thanks for your post.
I am not able to login to EITHER of the setup accounts,
Administrator plus my the second account with my user name
of Joe.

Further info: I had mistakenly removed entires for
winlogon in the registry after problems in the last two
days with a fraudulent security serctificate from Westpac
Banking Coporation (which they now know about). I had
checked my mc for virus (latest VET and McAfee, both
clean) and then latest AdAware and Spysoft. Could not
find the culprit software that was still bringing up the
to load fraudulent software. In searching on running
processes I found hits relating to winlogon and now
realise it was a good version.

So, how do I repair my registry?

Thanks, Joe
