is there a way to remove this recent update?
my 95 year old mother has a laptop bought for her from ebay (after a
corporate lease) but the new tool says it is not a valid XP!! but now it
puts up like 10 messages every time she boots - any way to remove this
update?

Did the laptop come with the reinstallation software? See this link for
what she legally should have received and what is needed to reinstall
Windows:

If your mother did not receive what she should have, then I'm afraid she
(or you as her helper) will need to contact the laptop mftr. and see
about getting a Recovery Disk for that model laptop. Or go to the store
and buy a legal copy of XP and do a clean install. Refer to the above
website article about drivers, etc.

And now you know why buying laptops on eBay is not necessarily A Good
Thing.
