Windows explorer has been acting up for a while, and I'm considering
reinstalling it.

How is that done?
Can I download it from M$? If so, where?
Will I need to reapply any service packs manually or will windows update
detect it?

Symptoms:
1) Frequently "generates errors" and is closed by windows.

2) Hangs at shut-down... have to manually end task.

3) Crashes when asked to handle "large transactions" like selecting and
deleting all files in a folder...

TIA
Chris

[re]install the latest service pack, and make sure you don't have anything
open when you do. Check your processes tab on the task manager to make sure
that you don't have any unnecessary hidden processes running, such as an
instance of iexplore.exe that you don't see.

And referring to Microsoft as M$ is derogatory and not appreciated in these
forums.

The explorer.exe program is the target of viruses and other infectors.
I suggest that you perform an online scan at McAfee or Trend for possible infectors.

Thanks Ray...

I just "happened" to have downloaded SP4 a few weeks ago... thinking it
would come in handy... and it DID!
Haven't had time enough to determine if reinstalling it will solve the
problem(s)... but the system certainly seemed to boot more efficiently, and
the Mouse is sliding across my mouse-pad more comfortably too (...just like
washing your car makes the engine run better!).

Please see message .

Thanks,

Hi David,

I've suspected a virus or something for a few months now... for other
reasons.

I've scanned and re-scanned,
did Symantic's online scan,
and up-dated to NAV 2004... and scanned more...
....and can find nothing... nada... zilch... except 2 nuisance adware files
that Ad-Aware_6 didn't catch.

What do ya' think... am I missing something?

Also, I just reinstalled SP4 per Ray's suggestion in a prior post... but
it's too early to tell if any improvement.
