how to recover old user acct?

HI..i had a boot problem with hAL.dll issues. So i reinstalled the OS files without formatting drive. Now when i log in to my account, all my files r gone. Also i have 2 accounts with the same name(user, user.old). my files are still there in the user.OLD, but i can't find a way to log into that account. also i have root dir for windows(winnt, windows). IS there anyway i can use that USER.OLD account again. THANKS FOR ANY HELP!!!

You can copy the contents from one to the other.
 
What if the former account had a password on it? Can not view the contents of the folder. I do know the password
