How to Recover email from corrupted Outlook

Hello,
My Outlook XP is somehow broken and it won't open anymore. I want to
uninstall and re-install Outlook but I don't want to lose my old emails and
address book. Is there a way to salvage them? Can I just save some files from
the old Outlook directory and paste them in the new after I re-install? Any
suggestions?
